DANIEL-HENRY KAHNWEILER. DEALER AND PUBLISHER

Kahnweiler was one of the greatest art dealers of the 20th century. His name remains closely linked to the history of Cubism. He was its first promoter, presenting the works of Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris and Fernand Léger in his Parisian gallery as early as 1908. He was also its best witness, as well as its first historian and editor. Severely punished by the convulsions of history, which in 1914 deprived the pacifist German of his collection and in 1940 stripped the Jewish man of all his possessions, Kahnweiler always remained faithful to an intellectual and moral ethic that gave his relations with his artists, more friendly than commercial, a particular character. A man with a sense of duty and conviction, he was the protector and collector of all the artists presented in his three successive galleries: the Kahnweiler Gallery, the Simon Gallery and the Louise Leiris Gallery.
